Three students spend months living, working and learning about Storm Lake, and discover new perspective.
"Life in Iowa" begins in Storm Lake for three Iowa State University students who have spent the last semester quietly studying and working in Storm Lake. They have been exploring the community and its diversity for a unique project, and have come away impressed.
ISU students Marie Hulsebus, Mir Lind and Kathy Marvick have spent the current semester taking classes at Buena Vista University and working in the community.
"Life in Iowa" is a new ISU Extension program that focuses on place-centered learning. This is the first semester of the new experimental program and Storm Lake the first community chosen.
While taking courses at BVU, students also interviewed 22 community agencies and nearly 60 family members who use them, particularly the minority families of the city.
Storm Lake was chosen so the students could continue to attend a university while they worked, and also because it provided the chance to experience a changing community.
