Run honors courage of Manson woman

Thursday, April 19, 2001

Emily Markert will be running once again as she joins other Northwest Iowa residents in the first-ever Adventure Trek coming to Snell-Crawford Park in Fort Dodge on May 5.

Registration will be held from 7 to 8 a.m., the run begins at 8 a.m. and walkers will take off at approximately 8:30 a.m.

About one year ago, Markert was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia that completely destroyed both of her lungs. The Manson woman's two uncles, Don and Larry Fitzgerald, each donated one lobe of their lungs to save Emily's life. Today, Markert wants to help those like her who suffer from lung disease and the American Lung Association is helping her achieve this goal.

The Adventure Trek course promises to be quite beautiful. Participants begin at Snell-Crawford Park, wind through Loomis Park along the shaded banks of the Des Moines River and continue through Holly Lions Park to the finish.

"This will be a great race to jump start the running season. The course is beautiful and all the runners should find it challenging. I hope the entire community will join me as we race to help others like me who suffer from lung disease," said Markert.
