Swimming pools a hot niche for Kuehl & Payer

Thursday, April 19, 2001

Storm Lake engineering firm Kuehl and Payer Ltd. is starting work on proposal for a possible new aquatic center for Storm Lake, but it isn't the first time the company has made a splash in the pool business.

"Right now we are the only consultant in Iowa doing pool work," smiles Neal Kuehl, as he talks about the large number of swimming pool projects that Kuehl and Payer has gained over the last two and a half years. "It's a niche area, one we didn't set out to enter, but we're in it now; we've developed an expertise no other firm in Iowa has; and work in this area just keeps coming in."

And then Neal begins to tick off the names of some of the cities and towns that have sought out Kuehl and Payer's engineering expertise to help them study, plan, design or replace their towns' pools. "Mapleton, Oskaloosa, Albia, Rock Rapids, Cherokee, Leon, Graettinger, Titonka..."

The list goes on. Most of the work coming as a result of referrals - as word has spread from one pleased town council to another. "Just the other day we got a call from Oakland, Neb. They knew about us because of the work we did on Sac City's pool. And a pool committee member from Sergeant Bluff called us because he knew about our work in Rock Rapids."
