Henry R. Gorman
September 19, 1923 - July 23, 2006
Henry R. Gorman, age 82, of Storm Lake, died Sunday, July 23, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held Thursday, July 27 at the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon, with Reverend David Schumann of the Marathon United Methodist Church officiating.
Henry Raymond Gorman was born September 19, 1923 to Bernard Wallace and Lena (Meyer) Gorman in Kenmare, N.D. He was baptized in Kenmare and attended school in Kenmare, graduating from high school there. Henry continued his education for the next four years at what was then known as Buena Vista College, graduating with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1949.
Henry entered the United States Navy and served during World War II from August 1943 to April 1946. He was honorably discharged on April 14, 1946 at the rank of Fireman First Class USS.
On October 5, 1946, Henry was united in marriage to Ruth Lenore Cooper in Storm Lake. They were blessed with a son, Bernard. Henry was a load dispatcher for the Montana-Dakota Utilities, spending many years in Glendive, Montana before he retired in 1986. Henry enjoyed golf, bowling and singing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Marathon. He will be remembered as a man who loved his family, as well as a good friend to many.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 59 years, Ruth; sister Kathryn Bauer of Minnetonka, Minn.; other extended family and friends.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Bernard; sister Marcella Cordes; sister Mary Lou Mahnke; brothers Wallace Gorman, John Gorman and Orlan Gorman.
March 12, 1920 - July 22, 2006
August Heinrich Diedrich Jalas, the son of August and Anna (Proehl) Jalas, was born March 12, 1920, at Sutherland. He was baptized in Calumet, in 1920 and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Paullina in May of 1933. He attended country school near his home through the 7th grade and went to Paullina Lutheran Parochial School his 8th grade year. After 8th grade he helped with the family farm. On January 26, 1944, he married Evelyn Amendt. They farmed all their life near Sutherland. They moved to Storm Lake in 1978, going into Real Estate. In July 1997, they moved back to Sutherland. To them were born six children: Delmar, Duane, Merle, Leon, Colleen and Wilma. August passed from this life on July 22, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center reaching the age of 86 years, 4 months and 10 days.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland until 1981, and then became a member of Grace Lutheran Church and returning to Bethel in 1997. Over the years he has held several church offices. His hobbies were playing dart ball, dancing and enjoying his family and grandchildren.
Funeral services for August Jalas, age 86 of Sutherland who passed away Saturday, July 22, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center were held Tuesday, July 25 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland with Rev. Leroy Riemerofficiating.
August leaves to cherish his memories, his wife, Evelyn Jalas; their children, Duane and his wife, Rosemary Jalas of Prentice, Wis.; Merle and his wife, Barbara Jalas of Sutherland; Leon and his wife, Donna Jalas of Niangua, Miss., Colleen and her husband, Richard Simm of Paullina; a daughter-in-law, Jacqueline and her husband, Mark Puhrmann of Paullina; and a son-in-law, Leo Schimmer of Storm Lake; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, Don Ray of Marcus; a sister-in-law, Deloras Jalas of Paullina; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Delmar Jalas; a daughter, Wilma Schimmer; a great-grandson, Lucas Jalas; two sisters, Lucille Ray and Bertha Wittrock; and a brother, Roy Jalas.
