Faust Institute of Cosmetology has been a part of the downtown area of Storm Lake on Erie Street for years. The school hosted 14 chairs for students to learn the ins and outs of all the branches cosmetology. Faust was growing and moved to the old Payless store on Lake Avenue.
After breaking ground on the new location in Mid-December, the crew was in place for their soft opening recently. Plans are set for a grand opening in the first part of August.
"We now have 5,000 square feet with 24 chairs," Justin Latham said about the new facility. "We have four six-side stations that are unique to the industry and better suit the students and the clients."
Currently 18 students are enrolled at the school to complete 2100 hours of training required by law in Iowa. The school is able to host up to 40 students but that is not the focus.
"We really focus on quality education over quantity," Latham said. "If we only have 20 students and we are able to provide them with the best education, we are happy with that."
The new location not only allows for education on hair styling, the institute is making sure that when a student steps out out the door they have a well rounded education. Students are also taught how do manicures, pedicures, facials along with hairstyling where students learn not just how to cut and style but also coloring, perms and anything else that may be expected of them in the salon.
"Our students will be able to able to step into any salon and be able to give manicures and facials one day with a pedicure the next and be able to cut hair in between times," Latham added.
Another feature the school offers is that students are educated in business and life science. The courses cover many subject matters that could be seen in regular colleges but are more geared to cosmetology.
The school utilizes multiple ways of reaching out to perspective students. There is a current program that is set up with local high schools that allows senior students interested to be able to come to the school to spend a couple hours in the day to learn about cosmetology.
Another fun event is the school will be hosting an open house to perspective students are invited ton July 26 The event showed students and their families that there is more to cosmetology then just cutting hair.

Faust has had many graduates that have gone onto to become successful owners or stylists after fulfilling their education at the school. Some graduates have returned to see the new location as well.
"We have numerous success stories from alumni and it's been interesting because we have been getting a lot alumni stopping to see the new place and have been getting a lot of positive reaction," Latham said.
The new location has created a lot of new businesses with new clients coming in to see the location. But there has been a return of older clients that have not been going to Faust for the styling needs.
"People came back that had left us for awhile now we need to show them that we can provide the service they are looking for and I think we can," Latham added.
Latham is also looking forward to the AWAYSIS project finishing and the benefits it will bring to the town.
"I think AWAYSIS is going to be great for Storm Lake," Latham said. "It will bring so much to the town. There will be people who will stop by to see what we are about."
Latham would like to invite everyone to come see what the Faust Institute of Cosmetology is achieving.
"Come on out and see what we are about," Latham added. "We have very talented students, they are great at pedicure, manicures and styling and these students are going to be some of the faces that could be cutting your hair in the future at different places."
