Dog Park to be proposed for Storm Lake

Thursday, July 27, 2006

A few local citizens plan to propose a new dog park development to Storm Lake city officials.

Dog parks have become popular projects for urban centers - grassy areas enclosed by thick plantings or fencing where people can bring their dogs to run off the leash.

Spencer is among other cities where such a project has been recently proposed.

Jeff and Jane Kestel are among those who believe the project may be a natural for Storm Lake.

Project AWAYSIS includes a large playground and Great lawn area, but like the existing city parks, dogs are only allowed on a leash. "A dog park would be a place where people can let the dogs go, throw Frisbees or a ball for them - living in the city, they may not have any other place to do that, at least not legally," the Kestels said.

The city currently has plans to remove an old water tower. Because so many water lines run close to the surface on the land, city officials said at a council meeting a week ago, there is little that could be done to develop the site afterward other than plant grass.

Some citizens feel that space would be perfect to make into a dog park, with little expense except for landscaping and a fence. The Kestels said that the proposal is just an idea, and that city officials might have other suggestions once the matter is brought to discussion.
