The Aurelia Commercial Club is planning two fun weekends in August to celebrate the summer.
Things will get underway with the Relay for Life walk and festivities at Spring Lake Park in Cherokee on Friday evening August 4. For those who won't be walking, there's lots of activity in Aurelia.
There will be dances going on all night, with the Storm Lake group "Two and a Half" playing from 7 -9 p.m. on Main Street, weather permitting. In case of rain, the show moves to Woody's Tap. The popular area group "100 Proof" takes over the music at 9 p.m., and will play until 1 a.m.
Things get started again a few hours later, with a Barbecue Cook-Off at the Aurelia Park from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. People are encouraged to get a team together to cook pork ribs and loins. Entry forms may be obtained from any Aurelia merchant. The entry fee is $30, and cash prizes will be awarded after the entries are judged at 4:30 p.m.
There will also be games and to their entertainment for the kids going on in the park all day, and a car show at 3 p.m. A supper will be catered by the Family Table from 5 - 7 p.m. in the park. Proceeds from the supper will go to the Relay for Life.
"Rock and Roll Wrestling," featuring midget wrestlers in a steel cage match, will start at 8:30 p.m. at Woody's, and will be followed by another "weather permitting" street dance, featuring "Ghost Ship," starting at 9 p.m.
After a week to recuperate, activities start up again on Friday, August 11 when the McDermott Carnival will be operating rides on Main Street. Performers at the street dance will be Cuz-n Eddy, from 9 p.m. - 1 a.m. The carnival resumes Saturday at 1 p.m. A tractor show also begins at 1 p.m. at the Aurelia park, and free refreshments will be available there.
Advance tickets for the McDermott rides are available at Aurelia businesses.
There will also be a petting zoo at the park. Come enjoy the Dog Daze of Summer in Aurelia.
