Voters in Buena Vista County will find a good election system even better by the next presidential election in 2008 thanks to a new educational program for local precinct election officials. Under the guidance of county auditor Karen Strawn, the precinct election officials are being provided training that will lead to certification. Under this program, counties in Iowa will become the first in the nation to certify precinct election officials.
The final session of a three-part Iowa Precinct Election Official Certification training program for election officials in Buena Vista County was held July 20, according to Strawn, whose duties as auditor include serving as the county's election commissioner.
The training was developed cooperatively by Iowa State University Extension, the Iowa State Association of County Auditors, and the Iowa Secretary of State's Office. It is designed to help ensure full compliance with all federal and state election laws and meet the guidelines of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) for open, honest, and fair elections.
The purpose of the training is to provide good customer service to voters, such as assisting voters with new voting equipment, handling special situations such as provisional ballots, and helping those voters with disabilities and other needs.
"This is an important element in guaranteeing the precision and legitimacy of Iowa's election process. I applaud all Iowa precinct officials who are committed to the reliability of voting in Iowa," said Secretary of State Chet Culver.
