The Iowa Department of Transportation has suggested that the City of Storm Lake consider changing West Milwaukee (Highway 7) from a four-lane road to a two-lane road with a center turning lane.
The arrangement would be similar to what was done several years ago on East Milwaukee/Flindt Drive. If approved, the changes would take place during the overlay project that the IDOT has on schedule for the summer of 2007.
IDOT research shows that a two lane road with a turning lane reduces crashes by about 26%.
DOT officials also believe it would reduce the number of serious injury accidents. The study specifically targeted Storm Lake and other Iowa communities as case studies.
The study points out that change in Flindt Drive as having a 51% reduction in accidents comparing the years before and after the change from four lane to two lane with a center turning lane.
The City Council will hear input from city staff, the IDOT and citizens on this issue prior to making a decision on whether or not to change West Milwaukee to a two lane road with center turning lane. Discussion is planned at their scheduled meeting on July 5, 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers in City Hall.
