Letter to the Pilot
The Da Vinci Code lies
To the editor:
I would like you to be very truthful with me Mr. Larsen. If I put up a billboard naming your immediate family members and claimed one is a kleptomaniac, one is a pole dancer at The Gentleman's club and one is pursuing a sex change operation, how would you feel? If I politely smiled and said, "Relax, I made it all up", would that make it okay with you?
If not, perhaps you would like to rethink your complacent editorial on the Da Vinci Code printed May 23, 2006.
Stating, "It's just a movie," is an irresponsible statement at best. The greatest tool of the devil is deception and Dan Brown uses it superbly. Are you aware that the book alone sold over 45 million copies? 53% of readers say it has been helpful in their Christian faith and 2 million people have changed their core belief. Faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior means eternal life. If Dan Brown's twisted lies hidden under the guise of fiction changed that for even one person, that is a tremendous tragedy.
Remember the outrage Muslims demonstrated recently when a cartoonist attacked their belief system? They were ready to kill for their faith. When Mel Gibson made a Biblically based movie about the crucifixion of Jesus, critics and the media mauled him. Yet Dan Brown purposefully distorts the truth, irresponsibly rewrites history and attacks the Savior of the world and people defend his actions. There is not one reputable historian in the world that endorses Dan Brown's account of historical events. Yet unsuspecting people actually believe his falsehoods.
Dan Brown didn't attack a fictional character people love. He attacked every Christian's living Savior. Unfortunately there are millions of lost souls who will believe in Dan Brown's Jesus, but if anything, this book and movie have given me an opportunity to talk about the Jesus God makes known to us in the Bible.
Not Dan Brown's bible, but the real, Holy Spirit inspired Bible that was written over a 1500-year span in time of both war and peace and written over 40 generations by more than 40 authors, from every walk of life.
Christians cannot sit back and comfortably accept the "it's just a book/movie" statement. We need to be ready to give the reason for the hope we have in Christ. In today's paper it was reported that Pakistan, a mostly Muslim country is banning "The Da Vinci Code" out of respect for the feelings of minority Christians. It's shameful that a Muslim country has more respect for Christians feelings then our own country, a country that has been founded on God and richly blessed by God. I agree, the Da Vinci Code is not real, but God is. The Bible tells us God sent His Son Jesus to die for our sins and all who believe in Jesus will have eternal life.
You were right when your wrote, "don't expect the dude from Bosom Buddies and Bachelor Party, along with Opie Taylor/Ritchie Cunningham, are going to bring about the downfall of 2000 years of Christianity." Right on! But not because of anything we do. It's because of who God is. God is eternal...
