CARROLL - Fabian Reyes and Ernesto Torres each scored a goal, but it wasn't enough as Carroll Kuemper handed Storm Lake a 4-2 setback in a soccer match Tuesday at Carroll.
Goalkeeper Justin Phillips had 13 saves for the Tornadoes, now 1-2 overall.
"The boys worked hard, but I didn't see the intensity that carried us against West. We certainly had some opportunities in the second half with something like nine shots on goal."
"Our skills are second to none. It's the mental game that I'm concerned about."
Kuemper won the JV contest 3-0.
Storm Lake 3, SC West 2
Storm Lake pulled out a thrilling victory over Sioux City West Monday night at Tornado Stadium.
The Wolverines took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Paul Shanafelt in the first period. Storm Lake tied the score on a goal by Jairo Cortes.
Cortes would score another goal to make it 2-1 Tornadoes before West tied the match with just under 2 minutes remaining in regulation.
Neither team scored in the first or second sudden-death overtime periods.
In a shootout format, Storm Lake scored four goals, but only one was needed for the win.
"These guys played extremely well against a team that had already had several games under its belt," Storm Lake coach Don Parkhurst said. "They maintained their intensity throughout a tough contest and simply refused to die."
"Jairo Cortes showed why he's one of our team captains, and Justin Phillips came through for us in about as tough a debut as a goalkeeper could have."
Sioux City West won the junior varsity match 3-0.
