St. Mary's Physics Olympics team takes second place in state

Thursday, April 12, 2001

The team of St. Mary's High School students Dan Frederick and Jon Sheller earned second place in the state in the Physics Olympic competition held recently in Cedar Rapids.

The students had a choice of projects including bicycle-powered water heaters, catapult cars, toothpick bridges, mousetrap cars or soda straw arms. The Frederick/Sheller team designed and created a soda straw arm to hold weights. The two said it took about two weeks to design the arm. At the competition, the students had 30 minutes to recreate their projects.

Frederick is a junior and Sheller is a freshman. St. Mary's educator Ryan Richardson is the Physics Olympics moderator.
