The sign in the window reads, "Spring has sprung" and Storm Lake Municipal Golf Course managers Denny and Diane Peters are looking forward to a busy season at the course.
"In the 16 years that we have been here, we've never had the season open this late," Diane said. "It was a long winter so people are anxious. I can't blame them, this winter seemed endless."
Last year the municipal course opened during the last week of March. "Usually the courses are open by the first of April," Diane said. "This winter left a horrible mess at the course and it's packed down tight."
Denny and Diane have been working at the course since March 15 and said there is still a lot of work to be done before they try to open the course.
"We're going to try to open the course on Saturday," Diane said. "It's not a for sure thing yet, but we're going to try."
"There are people who have played in Newell so that's a sign that it's time to open up," Denny said.
Due to the installation of a new watering system at the course, the opening date is taking slightly longer this year. Installation started last fall, but due to winter approaching quickly, work continues this week. "They're working to put it together, to fill in the trenches and finish hooking the water system up," Diane said. "It is making our opening day later this year."
