Area students perform with college choir

Thursday, April 12, 2001

Andrea Weinert and Sara Grieme, both of Alta, performed with Northwestern College's A Cappella Choir at churches in Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota on April 1.

Weinert is a junior music major and Grieme is a sophomore elementary education major at the Orange City college.

This year's program included music about two interrelated themes "God's gift to us" and "Our commitment to God."

The program included familiar titles like "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross," "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" and "Beautiful Savior." It also included songs that stretched the audience like "Vamvuvama," which is Swahili for "He was crucified for us," and "Siyahamba," Swahili for "We are walking in the light of God."

The A Capella Choir was established in 1928 and has represented Northwestern College in annual tours throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. The ensemble has performed on radio and TV, including appearances on Robert Schuller's "Hour of Power" and on Iowa Public Television.
