Thomas runs to 4th in 400 meters

Alta's Quentin Thomas saved his best 400 meter race of the season for the Class 1A Coed State meet here Thursday afternoon, taking fourth overall in a loaded, talented field.

Thomas ran in the fastest heat and finished third in prelims with a time of 50.41 seconds. After all three heats had run, Thomas had the fourth best time.

Kingsley-Pierson's senior Nick Kuchel won the 400 with a time of 48.87 seconds. He was followed by Preston sophomore Jordan Cornilsen (49.40 seconds), and Van Meters' Alex Miller (50.14).

Laurens-Marathon's sophomore Keton Joynt qualified for the finals in the 100 meter dash, finishing sixth overall with with a time of 11.27 seconds. He'll compete Saturday in the finals.

Lisbon senior Marquis Stephens had the top prelim time of 11 seconds flat, with Riceville senior Zach Shane second in 11.09 seconds.

In the 200 dash, Schaller-Crestland's Jeremy Robley was 24th overall with a prelim time of 23.98 seconds.

Three area teams placed in the 4x800 relay, with two finishing in the top eight.

The Sioux Central team of Marshall Wernimont, Nathan Lichter, Trevor Tiefenthaler and Eric Patten took sixth overall in 8 minutes, 20.73 seconds.

Aurelia's team of Aaron Hinkeldey, Chris Mikos, Jacob Bruce and Jared Bruce took eighth in 8:22.38, while the Alta team of Tyler Sliefert, Brad Payne, Tyler Boyd and Thomas took ninth in 8:25.27.

BCLUW was the 4x800 winner in 8:03.06, with North Linn of Troy Mills second (8:05.82) and Turkey Valley third (8:14.52).

In the field events, Alta senior Kyle Sauter took a ninth place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet, 1 inch. Sauter missed the finals by just four inches.

Also in the field events, Schaller-Crestland sophomore Kiley Murra had a good day in the throwing events. He took 13th in the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 2 inches.



Meanwhile, Alta continued its strong showing Friday when Brian Sauter qualified for the finals of the 110 high hurdles.

Running in the third heat, Sauter had the sixth best prelim time of 15.56 seconds. Brian's twin brother Kyle ran the 11th best prelim time of 15.80 seconds.

The Cyclones' distance medley relay team of Jack Mills, Mike Huseman, Kyle Sauter and Thomas took third place with a time of 3:35.93.

Newell-Fonda's 4x 400 team of Garret Bruner, Chad Buchholz, Chad Buchholz, Peter Olsen and David Hopper made the finals, finishing with the seventh best prelim time of 3:28.92.

In the 400 low hurdles, two area athletes placed, as Brian Sauter was tenth in 57.15 seconds and Schaller-Crestland's Cody Galvin took 12th in 57.43 seconds.

In the field events Friday, Laurens-Marathon's Travis Leuer was fourth with a leap of 6-4. Eli Oaman of Hinton won with a leap of 6-11.

Schaller-Crestland's Murra finished 23rd in the 1A discus with a toss of 125 feet, 5 inches.

In the relays, the Schaller-Crestland 4x100 team of Justin Ronk, Galvin, Brian Bode and Jeremy Robley finished 17th in 45.62 seconds. The Laurens-Marathon 4x100 team of Jason Gustafson, John Griffin, David Brechler and Keton Joynt finished 22nd in 46.28 seconds.

The Wildcats' 4x200 team of Ronk, Galvin, Bode and Robley was 16th in 1:34.08. The Cyclones also placed in two other relays. The 4x400 team of Kyle Sauter, Brad Payne, Brian Sauter and Quentin Thomas was 10th in 3:29.79, just .05 out of eighth place.
