A failing marriage may have been the reason Tim Hayden killed his wife and two children before taking his own life, police said Wednesday.
The bodies of Hayden, 38, his wife Marilyn, 37, and their children, Shawn, 17, and Lindsay, 15, were found May 11 in the family's home in Le Mars. It's believed the family members died of gunshot wounds the day before, police said.
Police said in a news release that a note left in the home indicated Tim Hayden did not want his children to have deal with his own suicide.
The gun believed to be used in the shootings was found with Hayden, police said.
Neither Hayden, nor his wife called their work that day or called the high school to report their children's absence, police said.
