The Storm Lake High boys tennis team split a pair of matches over the past week, edging Carroll-Kuemper last Saturday but losing a Lakes Conference dual meet here Tuesday to Spencer.
With the win over Kuemper, Ron Netten's Tornadoes improved to 2-4.
Storm Lake won three singles matches and won the competition by winning two of the three doubles matches.
In singles, SL's No. 1 player, Vinny Saengchanpheng doubled up on Kuemper's Peter Greteman, winning 10-5. In a matchup of No. 2 players, SLHS junior Chandavone Southiphong routed Patrick McCarthy, 10-2.
The Tornadoes lost their next two matches, as SL's Jacob Laursen lost a 10-4 decision to CK's Matt Behrens. Matt Bowman dropped his match 10-4 to Kuemper junior Austin Wittrock, 10-1.
Storm Lake senior Ellis Rattanavong rallied his team by winning a 10-3 decision over CK junior Andrew Humphrey. In the last singles match, CK's Collin Eischeid topped Erick Stephas, 10-5.
In doubles, Saengchanpheng and Southiphong beat McCarty and Wittrock 10-2, and Rattanavong and Stephas edged Eischeid and Jeff Nichols, 10-3 for the clincher.
In the second doubles match, Kuemper's Greteman and Behrens beat SL's Laursen and Bowman.
"It was an exciting, back and forth match with singles ending 3-3 and the match decided by doubles," Netten said.
"After splitting the first two doubles matches, Ellis and Erick stepped up with a convincing win to take the meet," Netten added.
In the JV match vs. Kuemper, the Tornadoes won a 6-3 decision. Singles winners for SLHS were Jeremy Boese, Cory Nelsen, Andy Storm and Keegan Morgan.
In doubles, the Tornadoes lost two matches but won the third via default.
In Tuesday's 6-3 loss at Spencer, The Tigers won the first two singles matches, as Spencer's Chris Lensing beat Saengchanpheng 10-6 and Dallas Boisen topped Southiphong, 10-8.
The Tigers also won the next two matches, as Laursen lost 10-0 to Zach Plagman and Bowman lost 10-0 to Kyle Kaldahl.
The Tornadoes fought back hard, winning the last two singles matches. Rattanavong beat Nick Bedore 10-6 and SL's Jeremy Boese tipped Ian McCloud 11-9.
In doubles, Saengchanpheng and Southiphong opened with a 10-5 win. In the second doubles match, Laursen and Bowman lost to Boisen and Kaldahl, then Rattanavong and Boese lost the last doubles match for the final margin.
In JV action Tuesday, Spencer beat the Tornadoes 9-0. Playing singles for Storm Lake were Stephas, Nelsen, Nels Fymbo, Storm, Keegan Morgan and Jacob Lyon.
