Symphony hosts Young Artists Concert
The Cherokee Symphony will proudly hold their Young Artist Concert on Sunday, April 30 at the Cherokee Community Center in Cherokee, at 4 p.m. The concert will feature four student soloists chosen based on auditions held February 18. Angela Miller, Brian Janssen, Melody Golnitz and Katerina Belkin will all have the opportunity to solo with the symphony under the direction of Maestro Lee Thorson, Storm Lake.
Angela Miller is a junior at the University of South Dakota. She has taken nine years of private lessons with Sandy Dingsor of Summit, South Dakota and has had three years of lessons with Dr. Susan Keith Gray oat the University of South Dakota. Angela has had extensive accompanying for three years at the University of South Dakota. She was also the SOMTA Collegiate winner of the piano competition in 2004 and USD Concerto Competition winner 2005. Angela is the daughter of Michael and Janet Miller of Vermilion, SD. She will be playing "Concerto No 3 in c minor" by Beethoven.
Melody Golnitz is from Oakdale, MN and is majoring in biology and Spanish at Buena Vista University. She grew up in a very musical household and began to sing in church at a young age. In high school, she participated in multiple choirs and also sang at church on Sunday mornings. In her junior year of high school, she began taking private voice lessons with Stephanie Phelps. In her time at Buena Vista, melody has been participating in NATS and also has taken part in Concert Choir, Jazz Choir, and private voice lessons. Melody currently is studying voice with Glee Crippen. Within the past year, she has also had the honor of singing with the Jazz Band at Buena Vista and the acappella groups Unintentional Dissonance and Aural Pleasure. Melody will be singing "Bester Jungling" by Mozart and "Laurie's Song - The Tender Land" by Copland. She is the daughter of David and Naomi Golnitz of Oakdale, MN.
Katerina Belkin is the daughter of Michael and Anna Belkin of Sioux City. She is a junior at North High School. Katerina has been studying the piano for seven years. She also plays the piano for the jazz band and plays the flute in the concert band. During marching band season, she plays the tenor quads in the drumline. Katerina will play "Concerto in B flat major" by Mozart.
Brian Janssen is the son of Terry and Donna Janssen of Aurelia. He currently a junior at the Aurelia Community School. His current instructor is Jason Heeren and he is taking lessons with Professor David Klee at Buena Vista University. Brian has participated in marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Band, having placed in the top five bands each year. he is also involved in Swing Choir, Jazz Choir, NW Iowa honor Choir and Small Group ensembles placing Best of Center for Sax twice. Brian also plays in the hand bell choir at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee and plays in the Storm Lake Municipal Band. He will be playing "Concertino da Camera" by Ibert.
Admission to the Cherokee Symphony Admission Yong Artists Concert is open to everyone, with tickets at $7. Symphony season tickets will be honored and all high school age or younger fans are admitted free of charge. Seating is limited as regulated by the fire code, so guests should arrive early for a good seat.
