The Storm Lake High boys tennis team captured one singles match and a doubles match on its home court Thursday before losing 7-2 to Spirit Lake-Okoboji.
Storm Lake's No. 1 player Vinny Saengchanpheng opened the meet with a 10-3 win over Spirit Lake senior Tom Bjornstad.
In a battle of No. 2 players, Spirit Lake's Scott Rholfson edged Chandavone Southiphong, 10-8. SLHS senior Jacob Laursen lost 10-2 to junior Jake Shell, while Tornado junior Matt Bowman lost 10-2 to senior Tyler Schultz.
In a matchup of No. 5 players, Spirit Lake's sophomore Scott Maudlin toppled Storm Lake's Ellis Rattanavong, 10-6. In the final singles match SLHS junior Erick Stephas lost to Mark Richter, 10-0.
The Tornadoes lost all three doubles matches. The SLHS doubles pairings were Saengchanpheng and Southiphong, Laursen and Matt Bowman, and Rattanavong and Stephas.
With the loss, the Storm Lake boys dropped to 1-4 on the season and in conference play.
"Spirit Lake was by far the most balanced club we've played so far," SLHS coach Ron Netten said. "Our guys fought hard, but we were simply outplayed in key matches."
With his singles win, Saengchanpheng improved to 3-2 on the season, while the SLHS doubles pair of Saengchanpheng and Southiphong improved to 3-1.
In JV action at the Buena Vista University courts, Spirit Lake edged the Tornadoes, 6-3.
Storm Lake's Jeremy Boese won his JV singles match 8-5 over Mason Bergquist of Spirit Lake. Keaton Murphy won by default.
Other SLHS JV singles players were Cory Nelson, Nels Fymbo, Andy Storm, Keegan Morgan, Keaton Murphy and Steven Vorasith.
