Storm Lake boys lap the field
The Storm Lake High boys track and field dominated some tough competition here Saturday in winning the Tomahawk Relays held at the Cherokee-Washington High track.
The Tornadoes finished 1-2 in three events, finishing with 154 points, 63 points ahead of second-place LeMars. Sioux City Bishop Heelan was third (69 points), followed by Denison -Schleswig (66 points), Spirit Lake Park (53), Spencer (33), Sioux City West (32) and Sioux City North 29 points.
Senior Logan Masters took three individual first places, and teammate Alex Spielman finished second to him in both hurdle events.
Masters also won the high jump with SLHS junior Zach Manteufel taking second.
Federico Mendoza won the 3200 meters and was third in the 1600.
In the 110 high hurdles, Masters won in 14.82 seconds with Spielman taking second in 15 seconds even. The pair also went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles, with Masters winning in 56.41 seconds and Spielman second in 58.50 seconds.
Masters won the high jump with a leap of 6-3, while Manteufel was second with a leap of 5-8.
Mendoza won the 3200 meters in 10 minutes, 35.92 seconds, over 20 seconds ahead of second-place Ryan Edwardson of Spirit Lake Park. Also in the 3200 meters, SLHS' Ryan Lovstad was sixth in 11:11.85.
In the weight events, Tornado senior Tony Raveling took home second place medals in both the shot put (47 feet, 4 inches) and the discus (134-1).
In the 800 meter run, senior Kevin Wulfekuhler was second in 2:04.61, with Jesse Munger sixth in 2:11.60. Josh Lewis of Sioux City North won with a meet record time of 1:59.44.
In the open sprint events, SLHS's Lamthong Sounnarath was third in the 100 meter dash in 11.50 seconds while senior Derrick Randall was fourth in the 200 meter dash in 23.78 seconds.
Mendoza capped his day with a third place in the 1600 meters in 4:55.51. Manteufel added a fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-10.5.
In the 400 meter dash, Storm Lake's Daren Koehler was fourth in 55.10 seconds, with teammate Tyson Brandt sixth in 55.38 seconds.
Also individually, Brendan Miller was sixth in the discus with a toss of 118-7 inches.
The Tornadoes fared well in the relays. The 4x100 team took first with a meet-record time of 44.17 seconds. The 4x200 relay team was second to Denison-Schleswig in 1:33.49, while the 4x800 team also took second place (8:36.60).
The 1600 medley relay team took second in 3:54.75 with the 4x400 team taking third in 3:37.59.
LeMars was led by first places from Jared Clement in the 100 dash (11.13 seconds) a 1-2 finish by Aaron Albus and Caleb VanOtterloo in the long jump and a first place in the shot put by Erik Tonsfeldt.
Storm Lake was at the Prairie Invitational in Gowrie Monday but results were not available at press time.
The Tornadoes are at Estherville-Lincoln Central Thursday and at Spirit Lake the following Tuesday.
The district meet is May 12 at Spirit Lake with the state meet May 18-20 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
