Cyclones capture second in small-school competition

Alta's Kyle Sauter won the 110 high hurdles and Quentin Thomas won the 200 meter dash here Saturday afternoon, as the Cyclones took second place in the small school division of the Tomahawk Relays.

Alta added a first place in the 4x800 relay.

Sauter had a winning time of 15.18 seconds in the 110 hurdles. His twin brother Brian took second in 15.44 seconds. Thomas won the 200 meter dash in 23.39 seconds.

The Cyclones' 4x800 relay team of Brad Payne, Tyler Boyd, Tyler Sliefert and Quentin Thomas won in 8 minutes, 33.02 seconds.

Cherokee won the meet with 129 points, with Alta second with 101 points and MOC/Floyd Valley third with 88 points.

Sioux Central was sixth out of nine teams with 48 points. Alta coach Wendell Larson said he was pleased with his team's performance.

"We did well against some bigger schools," he said. "We had some very good times for this early in the year, and we feel we're progressing with each meet."

The Cyclones added three second places and five third places.

Taking seconds were Payne in the long jump (20 feet, 1.25 inches), Jordan Letzring in the 3200 meters (10:50.30) and Brian Sauter in the long jump (15.44 seconds).

Brian Sauter added a third in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-10 inches, and and Mike Huseman took third in the 200 dash in 24.66 seconds. Tyler Boyd took first in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 12.08 seconds.

Two Alta relay teams placed third. The 4x100 relay team of Jake Bibler, Scott Radke, Huseman and Jack Mills was third in 47.39, with the 4x400 team of Chris Schmitz, Payne, Radke and Thomas taking third in 3:43.34.

The Cyclones' 4x200 relay team of Luke Ridout, Bibler, Radke and Mills was fourth in 1:40.06.

Individually, Kyle Sauter was fifth in the long jump (18-10.25), and fifth in the 400 dash in 55.13 seconds. Mills took sixth in the 100 meter dash in 11.80 seconds.

In compiling 48 points, the Rebels were led by first places in the 1600 Medley Relay and the 3200 meter run.

In the 3200, Rebel distance runner Connor Lindquist won in 10 minutes, 47.90 seconds. The 1600 Medley team of Justin Shideler, Josh Dahlin, Trevor Tiefenthaler and Eric Patten won in 3:48.30. Patten took second in the 1600 meter run in 4:51.00.

Sioux Central's 4x800 relay team of Nathan Lichter, Wernimont, Saunders and Patten was third in 8:27.90.

Individually Nick Sennert took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 44-8.5. Andy Saunders was fifth in the 3200 meters (11.48 seconds), while Wernimont was fifth in 1600 meters in 5:02. Dahlin added a fifth place in the discus with a toss of 115-4.
