William Penn sweeps pair from BV in softball

OSKALOOSA - Megan Bumann fired a two-hitter in the opener and Katie Kubanis collected three hits to fuel a 14-hit attack in the nightcap as William Penn swept a doubleheader from Buena Vista in Iowa Conference action Tuesday in Oskaloosa.

William Penn won the first game 2-1 and the second game 8-6.

Erin Quass suffered the loss in the opener, allowing six hits while walking two and striking out seven over seven innings.

Katie Richardson and Jeni Rydberg each had a hit.

The Statesmen scored seven runs in the first inning of the nightcap, then held on for the win. Kubanis had three hits, while Jennifer Roberts, Ashley Lynch and Beth Pickett all had two apiece against losing pitcher Traci Kragel.

Kragel allowed three hits and four runs without getting an out in the first inning.

Buena Vista had eight hits in the game, including two by Richardson. She clubbed a home run and drove in three runs. Laura Lunders had an RBI single for Buena Vista, now 0-2 in the league and 10-7 overall.
