BVU's Iehl, Lyman letter in basketball

Thursday, April 5, 2001

STORM LAKE - Brad Iehl of Storm Lake and Justin Lyman of Newell were members of the Buena Vista University men's basketball team this past season.

The team finished with a 21-6 overall record and a 16-4 conference mark under coach Brian Van Haaften.

Buena Vista placed second in the Iowa Conference and also second in the league tournament. The Beavers were led by junior Adam Jones, who averaged 15.6 points a game. Jones went over the 1,000-point mark in his career at BVU and stands in eighth place with 1,270 points.

The Beavers began the season 8-0 before losing to Wisconsin-Eau Claire 91-80 in overtime. Buena Vista would put together another eight-game winning streak later in the season, but came up short for the automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Championships after losing to Wartburg in the finals of the conference tournament.

Brett Smith led the Beavers in scoring in three of the first four games and earned consecutive player-of-the-week honors to start the conference season. Smith finished second in scoring with 13.2 points a game and led the team with 108 assists and 81 percent free-throw shooting. Nick Winters led the club in rebounding with 141.

Buena Vista set a new school record for the best mark in school history over a four-year period.
