The Iowa SAFE KIDS Coalition and Buena Vista Regional Medical Center are sponsoring a Car Seat Safety Check-Up on Saturday, April 7, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Fitzpatrick's Auto Center, 210 Sale Barn Road, in Storm Lake.
Parents and families are encouraged to bring their vehicles, car seats and children to have specially trained personnel check the installation and use of the car seat. Specific things that are checked include recall status, fit of the child in the seat and correct installation. This check up is an effort to make sure children are safe while riding in motor vehicles.
Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of unintentional injury-related deaths among children. In Iowa, 97 percent of child safety seats are installed improperly. Car seats and safety belts, when used correctly, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent.
The Iowa SAFE Kids Coalition is a statewide injury prevention effort made up of local coalitions, injury prevention organizations and individuals who are dedicated to fighting the number one killer of children, unintentional injuries. Blank Children's Hospital serves as the lead organization of the Iowa SAFE KIDS Coalition.
