Firemen respond to lake spill

Thursday, April 5, 2001

Citizens reported an apparent petroleum spill into Storm Lake Wednesday night.

An visibly oily slick extended from the storm water outflow near Lake Avenue and Lakeshore, stretching along the shoreline for about 75 yards to the west.

The Storm Lake Fire Department responded, wading into the frigid water and using absorbent pillows to try to control the flow of the pollutant. Storm Lake Police officers assisted.

The source of the spill, the amount of material that entered the lake, and the environmental impact were not known at presstime. Firefighters noted that the material smelled similar to diesel fuel.

The area where the spill occurred is one of the areas of the lake most populated by waterbirds at this time of season.
