Art Adventure trip: destination Omaha

Monday, March 20, 2006

The Spencer Area Arts Council will host a one-day art adventure trip to Omaha on Friday, April 14. The adventure will take participants to the Joslyn Art Museum to view "Illuminating the Word" and other exhibits on display.

The cost of the trip is $45 per person for non-members, and $40 for members of the Spencer Area Arts Council. The deadline to register for the trip is Wednesday, April 5, however early registration is encouraged as participation is limited to 18. Those interested in participating in the trip can register at Arts on Grand in downtown Spencer.

"Illuminating the Word" is an exhibit of the Saint John's Bible, the first hand written, illuminated Bible made since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago.

The Bible is commissioned by St. John's Abbey and University in Collegeville, MN, and executed by world-renowned calligrapher and illuminator Donald Jackson, senior scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth's Crown Office, and a team of scribes and artists. Using a modern English translation, the Saint John's Bible incorporates many of the characteristics of its medieval predecessors; calfskin vellum, handmade inks and pigments hand ground from precious minerals and stones such as lapis lazuli, vermilion, and malachite. It is illuminated with gold and silver leaf gild, and written by hand with quill pens. The illuminations reflect a multi-cultural world and humanity's strides in science and technology. Over 60 items are featured in this exhibition, including several as yet unbound pages (each measuring more than one foot wide by two feet tall) from the first three volumes of this seven volume undertaking. Started in March 2000, the project is scheduled for completion in 2007.

Arts on Grand is a multi-disciplinary, non profit arts agency dedicated to making the arts available to everybody. The facility features an exhibit gallery, gift gallery, and studio classrooms. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. For more information, please call 262-4307.
