Three SLHS boys gain All-Lakes Conference honors

Three of this year's Storm Lake High boys basketball team's five starters were recently honored by Lakes Conference officials and coaches.

Senior off-guard Logan Masters made the All-Lakes Conference first team, while senior post player Derrick Randall and junior point guard Alex Spielman gained second team honors.

This past season, Masters led the Tornadoes in scoring, averaging 20.13 points per game. The 6-foot-3 senior also averaged 4.44 rebounds per game, three assists per contest and just over three steals per game.

Masters also led the Tornadoes in three pointers, hitting 47 on the season out of 134 for 35 percent. Masters made 120 two point baskets in 227 attempts for 53 percent. He also led Storm Lake in free throws attempted, and made 82 for 64 percent.

Randall, a 6-6 senior, was second to Masters in scoring, netting an average of 15.6 ppg and 6.4 rebounds per contest.

The senior post player hit 148 of 284 two-point field goal attempts for 52 percent. Randall made 60 of 92 free throws for 65 percent.

Spielman, a 6-1 junior point guard, finished just behind Randall in scoring, averaging 13 ppg. He led the Tornadoes in assists with 3.2 per game and added nearly two steals per contest. Spielman also pulled down his share of rebounds, averaging 2.4 boards per game.

Other members of this season's All-Lakes first team were 6-3 junior Matt Geelan of Emmetsburg, 6-2 senior Mike Eekhoff of Western Christian, 6-2 senior John Doely of Sheldon, 6-1 junior Jared Clement of LeMars, 6-7 senior Carlie Landeget of Western Christian, 6-4 junior Stephen Kirschenbaum of Sheldon, 6-2 junior Syd Bergquist of Spirit Lake and 6-foot junior Dalston Jones of Emmetsburg.

Other members of the second All-Lakes Conference team were 6-2 senior Doug Neiderhiser of Spencer, 6-3 junior Cory Ege of Cherokee, 6-2 senior Brandon Phelan of LeMars, 6-9 junior Mike Bisinius of of Emmetsburg, 6-4 junior Levi Morris of Spencer, 6-foot sophomore Matt Gruhlke of Estherville-Lincoln Central, 5-9 junior Brad Deling of Estherville-Lincoln Central and 6-foot senior Ryan Phipps of Cherokee.


As a team this season, the Tornadoes went 11-12 overall, including 8-8 in the Lakes Conference.

The Tornadoes averaged 64, hit 48 percent of their two-pointers (470 of 980) and 31.6 percent of their three point shots (90 of 285).

Storm Lake made 268 of 457 free throws for 59 percent. They averaged 7.6 offensive boards per game and 18 defensive rebounds per contest. The Tornadoes averaged 8.6 turnovers per game and 8.8 assists per game.

Individually, 6-5 junior Aaron Clausen averaged 6.7 ppg. and 5.7 rebounds per contest. He also blocked 1.8 shots per game.

Seniors on this year's team were Masters, Derrick Randall, Jake Randolph, and Adam Sorbe.


Masters and Derrick Randall will be playing in the 'Pizza Ranch Defender Gold' All-Star game matching senior all-stars from the Lakes, Siouxland and War Eagle Conferences.

The game will be played March 25, with the girls all-star game starting at 6:15 and the boys game starts around 8 p.m. Both games will be played at Dordt College in Sioux City.

Lakes Conference players on the girls all-star team are Megan Brandt of Spencer, Katie Brown and Rachel Gerking of Spirit Lake, Anne Grady of LeMars, Kayla Henke and Jessica Hunecke of Cherokee, Betsy Van't Hul of Western Christian and Brittany Williamson of Emmetsburg.

Other Lakes Conference playes on the boys team includce John Doely of Sheldon, Mike Eekhoff and Carlie Landegent of Western Christian and Ryan Phipps of Cherokee.
