At a pep rally held on Sunday, March 12, the members of the Alta boy's basketball team were presented commemorative basketballs on behalf of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.
IFBF, the sole title sponsor of the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU), has made championship memorabilia and awards, such as these basketballs, available to athletes to recognize the hard work and dedication of Iowa's young people. IFBF also provides funding for scholarships and grants and recognition for academic excellence.
Each team member received one of the commemorative basketballs in recognition of their qualifying for the Iowa State Boys Basketball Tourney. Two current Buena Vista County Farm Bureau directors and 2 past directors handed out the basketballs.
The school had ordered 5 extra basketballs to be auctioned off to defray the cost of the team's expenses at state. A total of $6,390 was raised from these 5 basketballs along with some Alta Cyclone memorabilia. The first four balls went from $135 to around $330 each.
The last basketball auctioned off came with a signed photo of the basketball team. The two items went for $5300.
Kevin Cone, father of one of the team members, served as the auctioneer and really worked the crowd. At $2000 the bidding became fast and furious and the team members started clapping in unison which made the bidders bid even faster!
This was a great event to experience and shows just how much a community comes together when the team they have been supporting all year makes it to the state tournament.
Even though the Alta team was beaten by Bellvue Marquette in the first game, the players won't forget the assembly and how the community rallied around them.
