Elsie was born June 9, 1912, in Hurley, S.D., the daughter of Charles E. and Nelle I. (Lee) Anderson. The family moved to Gowrie where Elsie attended grade school and high school, graduating in 1929. She continued her education in Cedar Falls at Iowa State Teachers College (now U.N.I.) and graduated with a two-year teaching degree in 1931. She taught three years in Meriden and one year in Marcus.
On June 3, 1936, Elsie married Virgil L. Kruchten at the Gowrie Lutheran Church. For a short time after their marriage, they owned and operated the Gamble Store in Alta. The couple then began farming and spent the rest of their married life farming near Fonda. They were members of the United Church of Christ in Fonda. Elsie belonged to the UCC Ladies Circle and was a longtime member of the Federated Women's Club.
Elsie and Virg wintered in Arizona for several years, where they enjoyed many lasting friendships before Virg's death on June 28, 1988. Elsie was a resident at the Fonda Nursing Home the last two years and several months.
Elsie enjoyed the arts, especially classical music and art works. She thrilled to the beauty of nature-flowers, plants, trees, birds and kittens. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, and interior decorating. Her home, her devotion to and love for her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her faith and belief in God were her happinesses.
Survivors include her daughter, Sandra L. (E. Michael) Mullen of Alta; her son, Douglas A. (Lillian) Kruchten of Fonda; seven grandchildren: Ann E. Mullen of New York, N.Y.; John (Dr. Ellen) Mullen of Ames; Steven M. (Amy) Mullen of Des Moines; Joseph (Mackenzie) Kruchten of Anamosa; Georgia (Keith Peddie) Kruchten of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; Tom Kruchten of Des Moines; and Kristine Kruchten of Sneads Ferry, N.C.; eight great-grandchildren; nieces: Jan (Dr. Richard) Seagrave of Ames and Gwen Reiling of Fonda; nephews: Jack Kruchten of Milwaukee, Wis., and Keith Kruchten of Spirit Lake; as well as extended family and many friends.
Preceding Elsie in death were her husband, Virgil L. Kruchten; her parents, Charles and Nelle Anderson; her sister, Ruby Buckley; nieces Karlen Buckley and Lorraine Kruchten; and nephew David Buckley.
Elsie was artistic, creative, insightful and a natural teacher. She was a woman of great beauty, graciousness, faith and courage. An exemplary wife, mother, grandmother and teacher, she leaves us inestimably richer. Her death creates a void in those who love her that will always be felt. We cherish her, love her and miss her. We wish her a joy in heaven as great as the joy she gave us in life on earth.
