St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction "Passage to the Far East" raised an estimated record amount for St. Mary's Schools Saturday evening at the Buena Vista University Dows Grand Ballroom.
Organizers presented a "check" for $70,000 in net profits to school administrators near the end of the evening.
Chairs for the event were Dr. Troy and Grace Ivey, with Dave and Mary Drey serving as co-chairs. Funds were raised through advance ticket sales, a Big Raffle campaign, which started in the fall, a Chest of Chance "grab bag" feature, over 100 silent auction items, and nearly 60 live auction items.
A chartered bus trip from Excel Executive Coaches brought in the top dollar amount - $1,600, with KFC meals for the travelers. Two other bus trips added late in the evening brought in an additional $1,400 each. Other top draws included tuition at St. Mary's, a reserved parking place, Sr. Mary Margaret Donnelly Way alley and a treadmill.
The $10,000 Big Raffle drawing winner was St. Mary's parishioner Marty Feltner.
Bernie Kennedy of Storm Lake won the $2,500 prize, Al Bowles' name was drawn for the $1,000 prize, and Veronica Wiggins and Craig and Nancy Fratzke won $500 prizes each. Four hundred $100 tickets were sold for the Big Raffle.
St. Mary's Guidance Counselor Bev Mach won the Paxtons' diamond ring in the Chest of Chance. Diane Hartogh won the $200 prize and Tim Miller won the $100 prize. Five centerpiece door prizes were also awarded to those attending.
Over 350 attendees from around the region enjoyed appetizers and a sit-down dinner during the evening. Beer and wine cocktails were courtesy of Commercial Trust and Savings Bank. Following the live auction was dancing to Kevin Lind and the Buckeye Band, courtesy of Dr. Troy Ivey, BVCH Specialty Clinic.
Many student, recent graduate and adult volunteers worked during the evening to make the evening a success.
The Friends of St. Mary's Ball was organized in 1990 by Bob and Fran Lenhart and Jim and Laurie Murray. The event evolved into the St. Mary's Ball and Charity Auction in 1997 under the leadership of Don and Marita Kenyon.
The next event will be Saturday, March 23, 2002 with Dave and Mary Drey serving as chairs.
