The Storm Lake Board of Education approved several personnel changes during its recent February regular board meeting.
Contracts were approved for:
* Juliana Smith to serve as assistant with prom sponsor Esther Vieira at a cost of $321.
* Andrew Kuker to form a physics olympics team and serve as coach at a cost of $493.
* Julio Zeledon to serve as head boys soccer coach at a cost of $2,961.
* Mike Brostad to serve as assistant girls tennis coach at a cost of $1,974.
The board also accepted the resignation of Pam Hanna who has been serving as the concession stand sponsor pending that a replacement be found.
The board approved the student trip to Houston, Texas, along with teacher Andrew Kuker to participate in the NASA space settlement design competition. Students taking part are Nick Crippin, Jason Hustedt, Maya Peterson, Chris Reis, Tessa Winterton, and Kevin Wulfekuhler. Students were responsible for coming up with his or her own participation fee of $260. The school will pay for chaperone participation and other fees for a total of $760. Travel will be by chartered bus. Other area participating schools are Alta, Aurelia, Galva-Holstein, Sioux Central, Storm Lake St. Mary's. Thirteen other Iowa schools will be sending students as well as five Texas schools.
The trip will be March 9-March 13. Students will spend time at Johnson Space Center. Working in teams the students will design a mock space settlement on the planet Mars.
The board also approved a trip to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Neb., for third graders in correlation with the rain forest unit they are taking part in in their classrooms.
