Newell-Fonda races past Laurens-Marathon
The Newell-Fonda Mustangs started their postseason run with an impressive 80-50 win over Laurens-Marathon Monday in girls first round action.
The Mustangs jumped out in front early with a 20-9 first quarter lead. Hannah Reese poured in 21 points, Sarah Culp and Rachel Culp had 14 and 12 points respectively. Center Sam Shaffer added 11
Newell-Fonda Head Coach Dick Jungers was pleased with his team's effort. "We moved the ball around on offense, and took Laurens out of their game plan. The shots were just falling for us tonight."
The Laurens-Marathon staff said that N-F's opening run was too much for their young team to overcome. While the girls played hard in the second and third quarters, the Mustangs were able to take them out of their rythym.
Reese had six three-pointers, and Newell-Fonda canned 11 from beyond the arc, with no treys for Laurens-Marathon.
The leading scorers for the Chargers were Lacey Hall with 15 points and Lindsey Peters with 10. Kelsey Meyer added 8.
The Mustangs will face the winner of Rockwell City-Lytton and Southern Cal at Rockwell City this Saturday.
L-M finishes 4-18, but graduates just one senior.
