Wildcats advance four to district meet

Qualifying six wrestlers to next week's Class 1A District meet, Graettinger-Terril took the team title at a sectional meet Saturday in Laurens.

G-T won the competition with 193 points while Okoboji was a close second with 187 points. Manson-Northwest Webster was third with 176.5 points.

The top area finisher was Schaller-Crestland, which took fourth place with 154.5 points. The Wildcats qualified four wrestlers to next week's district meet, while three other individuals missing districts by one match.

The top two individuals in each weight class advanced to next Saturday's District meet in Sioux Rapids.

Alta took sixth place as a team and qualified two individuals to districts. Laurens-Marathon was seventh in the team competition and Sioux Central eighth. Neither the Chargers or Rebels qualified a wrestler to districts.

Qualifying for Schaller-Crestland were Mark McDonough, who took second at 135 pounds. He improved his season record to 27-8 with a after winning his first three matches Saturday but losing the title match to Tony Leiss of Okoboji.

Matt Tielbur (23-10) added a section championship by winning all four matches, including a come-from-behind win over Dalton Rasch of Manson Northwest Webster in the 152-pound championship.

Schaller-Crestland's 160-pounder Jeremy Robley added a section title as well. He won all three of his matches by pin, including a pin of Jason Brons in the finals. With the three wins, Robley improved his season record to 26-5.

Wildcat senior Michael Weber won a section title at 275. Weber, 30-8, won his first three matches then avenged two earlier losses to Graettinger-Terri's Jake Brown.

Just missing district berths were Brett Pryor, Nathan Frank and Zach Stephens. Pryor, a 125-pound sophomore won his first match, lost his second then won the match for third place.

Frank also took a third place, beating Alta's Scott Launderville for third place. At 171 pounds, Stephens also took third place, finishing his season with a 22-16 mark.

Leading the way for Alta were 125-pounder Scott Robbins and 140 pounder Brandon Piercy. Both took second places.

Robbins, 34-6, lost to Jordan Troshynski of Manson-Northwest Webster in the 125-pound championship match.

Piercy, a 140-pound senior, lost his championship match to Tim Poyzer of Pocahontas Area. Piercy will enter Saturday's district meet with a 26-16 mark. Three more Alta wrestlers took third places, including 112 pounder Cody Hunter, 215 pounder Morgan Van Houten and 275-pounder T.J. Aube.

Four Laurens-Marathon wrestlers captured third places, including 103-pound freshman Rueben Wenell, 135-pound junior Lewis Wenell, 140 pound senior Brett Snyder and 145-pound senior Brandon Kay.
