Fort Dodge Choral Society will present "The Joy of Singing" on Saturday, February 18 at 7:30 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, Fort Dodge.
The concert will include Brahms' "Liebeslieder Waltzes" and special guest performances by soprano Lisa De Vries and Fort Dodge native Jenna Ziems. Both soloist are recipients of Choral Society collegiate scholarships.
The German composer Brahms wrote his "Lovesong Waltzes" as a tribute to Johann Strauss. The work, for piano duet and choir, features pianist Michelle Havlikjergens and Bruce Perry. The set of dances allows the choir to explore the many facets of love and joy.
De Vries is a junior at Dordt College majoring in vocal performance and pedagogy. She is a soloist at Dordt and in the Sioux Center community, serves as a student assistant to the director of choral activities, and teaches her own vice students. She will be joined by clarinetist Ardella Hein for a performance of Franz Schkubert's "Shepherd on the Rock."
Ziems is a senior music major at Luther. She is a Weston Noble music scholarship winner, participates in three vocal ensembles at Luther, and is an honor student. Ziems is the daughter of Timothy and Pat Ziems of Fort Dodge, She will perform songs by Clara Schumann and Mozart's famous "Alleluia."
Fort Dodge Choral Society is dedicated to great singing and bring wonderful choral works to life. The group unites talented singers from Fort Dodge and the surrounding counties. FDCS annually awards scholarships to students majoring in music at any college.
Admission to the concert, at 211 South 9th, Fort Dodge, is available at the door. Prices are $9, $8 for senior citizens and $4 for students.
