Griggs picks up slack as BVU women win

Team faces Coe Tuesday, then showdown with Simpson at home Sat.

The Buena Vista University women's basketball team won its fourth straight game by defeating the University of Dubuque 93-64 here Saturday in an Iowa Conference matchup

Trailing by one at halftime, the Beavers outscored the Spartans 60-30 in the second half to claim the win. They improved to 5-1 in conference action and to 10-5 overall.

BVU forward Jess Griggs scored a team-high 19 points off of the Buena Vista bench. Katie Maguire recorded a double-double with 15 points and a career-high 13 assists. Katie Ernst also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Tracy Hartwig added 10 points.

Trailing 41-37 early in the second-half, Buena Vista went on a 40-10 run to take a commanding 77-51 advantage with seven minutes to go in the game. The Beavers shot a sizzling 18 of 29 (62 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Taylor Folz scored a game-high 24 points to lead Dubuque. Brittney Dickey added 14 points for the Spartans who fell to 7-10 on the year, 1-7 in the IIAC.

Buena Vista turned in another outstanding performance from behind the three-point arc and at the free-throw line. The Beavers were 10 of 21 (percent) from long range and 25 of 32 (78 percent ) from the charity stripe.

Buena Vista faces two crucial conference games at home this week.

Tuesday, the Beavers play host to Coe College (3-3 IIAC, 5-10 overall) Tuesday night at 6 and host conference leader Simpson (8-0, 14-3) on Friday starting at 4 p.m.

This week, meanwhile, will be crucial for the top two conference teams, BVU and Simpson.

Simpson plays at Luther Tuesday then faces off with BVU Friday in Storm Lake
