Tuesday, January 17, 2006

The Buena Vista University wrestling team concluded a remarkable run at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals by defeating Augustana College 26-13 in the fifth-place match on Sunday. The Beavers defeated three ranked teams during the weekend while going 4-1.

Buena Vista began competition on Saturday with a 31-9 victory over 20th ranked St. John's University. The Beavers, ranked 26th in the nation, were the only unseeded team to register a first-round victory. The Johnnies were the seventh seed in the tournament.

Dana Vote (157) and Wade Hammen (285) each pinned their opponent as Buena Vista won eight of the 10 matches. Vote's victory came over Jacob Malone, who was ranked eighth in the nation. Ben Strandberg (197) recorded a 3-1 victory over fifth-ranked Dan Fiecko.

Buena Vista then lost its only match of the tournament to second-ranked UW-La Crosse in the quarterfinal round 30-16. Buena Vista won four of the 10 matches including Ryan Pratt's pin in the 125 pound weight class.

The Beavers bounced back to defeat 27th-ranked McDaniel College. Buena Vista won seven of the 10 matches, including four by fall. Kyle Forness (149), Brian Steuve (184), Strandberg, and Hammen all won courtesy of a pin.

Buena Vista concluded Saturday by edging Iowa Conference rival Cornell College 18-16. Both the Beavers and the Rams, who are ranked 19th in the country, won five matches. Eight of the bouts were by minor decision, with Cornell claiming a major decision at 125 and Buena Vista securing the victory behind Hammen's pin at 285. The two squads will meet in a rematch on Thursday, January 19 in Storm Lake.
