Designated Scholarships help Dollars for Scholars

Thursday, January 12, 2006

The Storm Lake Dollars for Scholars fund drive continues with private donations totaling to date $12,614. Every dollar raised through the local fund drive is invested in the education of the young people of Storm Lake, since administration is entirely volunteer, and expenses are funded with profits from the recyclable can receptacle located at Hy-Vee.

In addition, designated scholarships, in the amount of $300 or more, are a major source of scholarship money during each year's drive. The following companies, groups, individuals or organizations have pledged to award designated scholarships for the year 2005-2006: Amvets Post 66; B.J. Strandberg Memorial; Brad Smith Memorial; Everett Iverson Memorial; MetaBank, Iowa Central Auto Mechanics; Iowa Central Industrial, Mechanical, Electric, and Maintenance; Iowa Central Nursing; Joan Vilas Memorial; Kim Behrens; Kristin Kelly-Zoucha; Meals on Wheels; Nicholson Family; Northwest Federal; Nyles and Marlene Myers Scholarship; Piper Jaffray; Ressler Drug; Robert and Alice Mailliard; St. Mary's School staff; Sara Lee Foods; Security Trust & Savings Bank; Sports Rehab and Professional Therapy Associates; Stalcup Agriculture; Storm Lake Education Association; Storm Lake Hy-Noon Kiwanis; Storm Lake Rotary; Tyson Fresh Meats Scholarship; Veolia Water; Weseman-Fratzke Family Scholarship; and Witter Gallery.

Area residents are invited to join the community-wide effort to provide scholarships for the seniors of 2006. Tax deductible contributions may be sent to Dollars for Scholars, 119 W. 6th St., Storm Lake, IA 50588. Any local service group, business or individual interested in fully funding a scholarship, or any family who wishes to designate a scholarship with memorial money can get details by calling Dean Nicholson (732-1465), Awards Committee Chairman.
