VERMILLION, S.D. - Pete Harder and Shane Maier each captured a first-place finish at the prestigious Midwest High School Championships indoor track and field meet on Saturday at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, S.D.
Harder won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 52.3 seconds. Maier claimed the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 3/4 inches. Last week, Maier won the shot put at the Lakes Conference indoor meet with a whopping throw of 55-8 1/2.
Jeff DeHaan was a close second in the 55 meter high hurdles with a time of 7.98 seconds. Rory Fulcher leaped 20 feet 4 inches to finish second in the long jump.
The 4x200 relay tandem of Justin Koeppe, T.J. Miller, DeHaan and Jim Phouangphet placed fourth with a time of 1:38.54.
Koeppe finished fifth in the 55 meter high hurdles in 8.5 seconds, while Kurt Hanna was seventh in the 400 meters with a clocking of 56.21 seconds. Fulcher placed eighth in 56.22.
"The coaching staff was very proud of the effort and performances of everyone," Storm Lake coach Dean Nicholson said. "Competing without the services of eight squad members due to injury and other commitments, they made a great showing and should feel good about their accomplishments."
