New store gives good quality used items 'Second Chance'

Thursday, December 15, 2005

There's a new store open in Alta, just in time for you to visit and purchase a few last minute Christmas gifts.

Glennis Halverson is the owner of Second Chance, a thrift store featuring a wide array of gently used items.

"Opening this store is something I have wanted to do for a long time," she said. "Everyone like bargains. I like bargains!"

The store is maticulously organized with shelves and racks holding video tapes, books, Beanie Babies, Ty dolls, Barbies, Boyd (collector) Bears, CDs, jewelry, purses, a variety of whimsical cookie jars and clothing of all sizes. The walls hold pictures that would fit into anyone's home decor. She is planning on having several PlayStation 2 games available soon.

There is also a wonderful array of holiday items to select from. And best of all, the prices for these top-quality items ranges from 50 cents to $15.

Glennis doesn't take consignments in the store but she is more than willing to consider purchasing any items you are looking to part with. But she is going to be picky about what she buys and what she doesn't.

"I'm looking for clean items, things I would consider buying."

One thing the store will not have is exercise equipment because of lack of space.

By being the sole owner of all of the contents in the store, she can decide what to do with the items that just aren't moving. She plans to support St. Mary's thrift store SOS (Save Our School) located in Storm Lake which sells items that have been donated; all proceeds of that store go to the school.

Glennis is not new to the business world; some 20 years ago she was the owner of a gift shop featuring new items in Webb. She enjoys thrift stores and has visited a number of them over the years, making a list of what to do and not to do to make her own thrift store successful.

Glennis is excited about this new venture and offering the community of Alta and surrounding communities a fun new place to shop.

The store is located in the Masonic Lodge building on Main Street. The store will be open Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Second Chance will be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.

If interested in talking to Glennis about purchasing items for her store, stop in or call the store at 200-3770.
