Music Department off to good start

Tuesday, December 6, 2005

The year is off to an excellent start for the Storm Lake Music Department!

The Beach Party, the department's annual back-to-school event that connects the community with our students and teachers for an evening of fun, got things going in August.

The marching band had a successful season, earning a "I" rating at state contest. There is a solid group of students in 4th and 5th grade beginning orchestra and band. Dozens of students at the middle school and high school level have honed their skills to audition for a number of honor bands and choirs, including All-State, with many selected to participate in these events. Preparations are underway for upcoming holiday concerts. Our high school students have been knocking on doors with the annual fruit, cheese and chocolate sales campaign. Students have also been busy selling tickets for our "Trip of a Lifetime" raffle, a chance at a $5000 voucher for travel. You may be interested to know that profits from these sales go directly into the accounts of the individual students to be used for their own music education expenses. This money primarily goes toward the student's participation in the music department trip to Florida in March 2006. Your support is appreciated!

You are invited to support the musical arts overall in the Storm Lake Community Schools by joining Crescendo Club 2005-06. Financial contribution provides durable music resources for grades K-12, which directly enhances the music education programs for all students.

Thanks to the generous donations in the last year, the Music Boosters were able to realize the 2004-05 goals. Crescendo Club funds were used to make major purchases of two concert tubas, two bass clarinets, marching band cymbals, additional tuxedos and garment bags, jazz band jackets and the overhaul of two orchestra instruments. Past purchases have included risers for the middle school, sound and recording equipment, a variety of large instruments and uniforms for the different ensembles, and a sizable donation to install air conditioning in the high school music department.

Community backing is vital to the music department and to the work of the Music Boosters. Membership in Crescendo Club gives you the opportunity to directly enhance the music education programs in the Storm Lake schools. Contributions will provide durable music resources for grade K-12 which are not possible through the music department budget.

Contributing your dollars will put you into one of four musical classes:

* Andante - "Smooth and flowing" - donations of $30 to $59. these donations help provide the necessary funds to keep the music programs running smoothly and are the backbone of the Crescendo Club.

* Allegro - "Fast and lively" - donations of $60 to $99.Monies are needed to help pick up the pace and provide support for students in new areas. In this way the Crescendo Club will foster exciting opportunities for musical groups.

* Conductor's Choice - "Maestro's challenge" - donations of $100-$999. These gifts will help students become the best they can be. Challenge them and challenge yourself to give a conductor's choice gift now.

* Lifetime member - $1,000 or more. Musical enrichment for a lifetime.
