ACES-on-AIR program Nov. 8

Thursday, November 3, 2005

Advanced Career Exploration students from Storm Lake High School will again produce "ACE-on-AIR" Tuesday night, Nov. 8, from 6-8 p.m. over KAYL 101.7 FM radio.

This is the sixth year for the student-produced radio show under the direction of Pegg Havens, ACE instructor. According to Havens, students have been busy selling 30-second commercials to local businesses and collecting donations to be used as giveaways and drawings during the show. In most cases, the students write the commercials and record them at KAYL which has donated all its services and airtime for the two-hour program. Several commercials are also in Spanish.

Corporate sponsors for the show are Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Buena Vista University, Iowa Central Community College, Sara Lee Foods, and Tyson Fresh Meats Incorporated. These companies sponsor the live remote broadcasts directly from the high-school student center during the radio show.

Also included in the show is the Top 13 Hit List from Storm Lake High School and trivia questions with prizes for the correct call-in answers. Drew Jones and Justin Lovan will serve as DJ's for the remote breaks from the high-school carnival. Student DJ's at KAYL will be Jesse Halder, Juvenal Soria, Kayla Dewey, Frank Rolon, Juan Castro, and Juan Vazquez. The target audience is high-school and middle-school students, but the public is encouraged to listen. The purpose of he fundraiser is to help cover the costs for Storm Lake ACE Student Leadership Training, spring competitions, and other program expenses.

High-school and middle-school students are invited to participate in the ACE-on-AIR Carnival at the Storm Lake High School Student Center from 6-8 p.m. Please note the time change this year. As students listen to the radio show, they can participate in various games and activities organized by ACE students and purchase drinks from the Daily Grind, the expresso cart run by ACE students. All games are free, and students will have many opportunities to win great prizes donated by area businesses. Drinks from the expresso cart run from $1 to $3.25, with turtles being offered for half price during the festival. All Storm Lake students are encouraged to join in the fun. The entire public is invited to listen to "ACE-on-AIR" over KAYL and participate in the trivia questions as read by the student DJ's during the show. According to Drew Jones, ACE President, "I'm really excited about ACE-on-AIR this year; I think it's going to be pretty good. We should have a good turnout of students."
