The Depot celebrates 15 years

Friday, March 16, 2001

Bob and Karen Pender have been sharing a little bit of history for 15 years through their antique-railroad themed business in Alta.

The Penders are the owners of The Depot Steakhouse and Lounge and say they can't believe it's been 15 years since they first opened their doors.

The Depot will celebrate its 15th anniversary today and the Penders hope everyone stops in to share in the memories. Bob and Karen will have birthday cake, specials and trips to Las Vegas to give away during their special day.

Bob and Karen decided to go into business for themselves in 1986. The Depot had originally been run as a restaurant, but had sat empty for two years prior to the Pender's purchase.

"I was managing the Storm Lake Bowl and Bob was working at the Co-op before this," Karen said. "We decided we wanted to try something different and were able to cut a deal so we bought it."

The couple went to work cleaning their 1912 restaurant that has gained a great deal of popularity over the years.

The Depot became so popular that ten years ago, the Penders decided they needed more seating room to handle their customers. They came across an 80-foot yellow rail car they felt would be the perfect addition. They loved the possibilities its size offered to their enterprise.

"We found that we needed more room," Karen said. "We had people lined up at the door. The rail car has been a very good addition."
