School and city discuss recreation complex and new gym
A joint meeting between the Alta School Board and the Alta City Council was held Monday night to discuss the cooperation between the city and the school on a recreation complex and/or gym.
An addition to the previous school buildings, a media center and a new gym were topics of concern. The two groups discussed what they see as most beneficial to the city and the school.
School board president Wes Holmes said he could see that a community complex would be very beneficial in combination for the city and the school. Both groups felt such a facility would see a lot of use with the availability of the current two gyms being hard to come by.
The current gyms are used in the mornings and in the evenings for different practices and activities. The gyms are so busy that community members wishing to use the facility for walking purposes can not find time to do so.
"I know there are a lot of people that go to the Storm Lake middle school to walk in the mornings," council member Dan Sliefert said.
According to elementary principal Maxine Lampe, the elementary gym is always busy. While people could walk there, they would have to be careful not to get hit by a ball. The after-school program is held in the gym following the school day so it is hard to find time to use the gym, she agreed.
