The Sioux Central boys edged rival Alta here Saturday morning, winning the Laurens-Marathon Invitational cross country meet held at the Laurens Golf Course.
The Rebels finished with 62 points to 83 for second-place Alta. Battle Creek-Ida Grove was third in the ten team meet. Laurens-Marathon was ninth with 251 points.
Sioux Central was led by Eric Patten and Connor Lindquist. Patten finished the 5,000 meter course in fourth place with a time of 16 minutes, 41 seconds. Lindquist was seventh overall in 17:21. Both were season's best times, according to Rebel boys cross country coach Brad Peter.
Also for Sioux Central, Mark Saunders was 13th with a career-best time of 17:31. Nate Lichter ran a career best 17:51 for 17th, and Andy Saunders was 21st in 18:09. Jesse Steece was 22nd with a season's best time of 18:19.
"The varsity had a great day," Peter said after the race. "Every one of our kids had either a season's best time or a career best time.
"We had great weather on a fast course, which played a part in the times. But our kids have been working extremely hard the last few weeks."
The Alta boys team was led by Quentin Thomas, fifth in 16:45. and Jordan Letzring, sixth in 17:10. Tyler Sliefert was 14th in 17:48.
Kyle Sauter was 26th for the Cyclones in 18:24. He was followed by Brian Sauter, 32nd in 18:52; Alan Hinkeldey, 41st in 19:04, and Jared Buckendahl, 43rd in 19:11.
"The kids gave a good effort," Alta coach Wendell Larson said. "It was a cool, crisp morning with a bit of a south breeze. The boys course was about 200-300 meters short while the girls course may have been a little long, so the times might be a little deceiving."
For the Laurens-Marathon boys, Matt Hertz led the way with a 34th place finish. C.J. Mayou was 48th, Tyler Koenig 55th, Jamie Hertz 56th and Justin Depew 58th.
For the Aurelia boys, Nathan Anderson was 61st in 21:59, while Kyle Doherty was 62nd in 22:20.
In the varsity boys race, Southern Cal's Wes Farrington won in 16:28. Caleb Egger of Galva-Holstein was second in 16:24 while Peter Hoffmann of Battle Creek-Ida Grove was third in 16:34.
In the girls varsity race, Southeast Webster won the team competition with 52 points, edging second-place Galva Holstein with 57 points. BC-IG was fourth with 62 points.
The Sioux Central girls were fourth with 129 points, with Alta sixth with 148 points.
Briana Scharn led the Rebels with a 13th place finish in 18:55. She was followed by Chelsea Winterboer, 21st in 19:31, Nicole Lindquist, 23rd in 19:33, Shana Hamilton, 30th in 20:19, Rachel Henningson, 42nd in 22:15 and Jessica Rix, 44th in 22:16.
Sioux Central girls cross country coach Chris Smith was pleased with his team's performance.
"The girls ran well (Saturday), but we need to get a little more aggressive to improve our places," Smith said. "This was a great opportunity for us to see how we stack up for the conference title. We have some work to do if we want to challenge the top teams.'
Smith added that Southeast Webster is most likely the team to beat.
"Hopefully, we'll have a good week of practice and the girls will turn in their best times at the conference meet Saturday," he said.
In Laurens Saturday, the Alta girls were led by Megan Suhr, who took 24th in 19:42. Katie Connolly added a 25th place in 19:48, while Anne Curbow was 29th in 20:08.
Following, were: Kelsie Petersen, 32nd in 20:20, Danielle Waites, 38th in 21:31, Tara Huseman, 43rd in 22:15 and Lakin Stevicks, 48th in 22:30.
Saturday's individual winner was Becky Magen of BC-IG, who finished in 17:16. Severie Orngard was second in 17:18.
Also in the girls varsity race, Aurelia senior Wendy Nelson took third place overall, medaling with a time of 17:45. Teammate Christa Ballantyne was 49th for the Bulldogs in 22:51.
"This was one of Wendy's best finishes," said Aurelia cross country coach Jolene Hultgren. "She finished ahead of several runners her had beaten her earlier in the season. "She is improving with every meet. Christa also had a nice run."
The Laurens-Marathon girls were led by a 27th place from sophomore Megan Hofmaster. Kari Fredriks was 31st, with Krista Fredriks 39th. Becky Josephson was 36th and Erica Teague 53rd.
In the junior varsity boys race, Rebel Pat Smith ran a career-best for 5,000 meters, taking 24th in 25:02, three minutes than his previous best.
The Alta JV boys won their competition with 39 points. Galva-Holstein was second with 53 points and Southern Cal third with 71.
Jordan Hinkeldey led the Alta JV, taking third in 19:20. Also medaling for the Cyclones was Nick Sand, fifth in 19:31.
