Fort Dodge Choral Society will open its new season on Sunday, Oct. 23, with a 3 p.m. concert at Phillips Middle School Auditorium celebrating the "Joy of the Stage." Conductor Bruce Perry and the 40-voiced choir will lead the audience on a sentimental journey of favorites by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, John Rutter, and Gilbert and Sullivan. Pianist Michelle Havlik-Jergens will join the group in presenting some of the most memorable melodies of the past century.
Gershwin's music is certainly an American treasure. In describing his songs, the composer said, "Music must reflect the thoughts and aspirations of the people and the time. My people are American. My time is today." Upon hearing "I Got Rhythm," "Summertime," "Rhapsody in Blue," and "Strike Up the Band," listeners will agree that Gershwin's music is as fresh today as it was 80 years ago.
Admission to the concert, located at 1015 Fifth Avenue North, Fort Dodge, is by season membership or available at the door. Ticket prices are $9 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and $4 for students. See www.fdchoralsociety.org.
