Numbered lottery balls bounced the right way for one player in Spencer, but Iowa Lottery officials have yet to hear from the Car-Go Express patron who purchased a Powerball ticket worth $200,000.
Don Plaisance, of the Iowa Lottery District Office in Storm Lake, confirmed that the drawing a week ago Saturday produced a $200,000 prize at the convenience store in north Spencer. The winning numbers were 8-18-38-45-54 with a powerball of 23.
It's not unusual for a big prize winner to lay low at first
Plaisance said, "They might be trying to get their eggs in a row before they come forward. Or it might be a group - we don't know, but it's a typical thing to see a lag in time before they come forward."
Ken Schroeder, manager at Car-Go Express, said a customer at his store secured five correct numbers on one other occasion and won $100,000.
The mystery winner is benefiting from recent change in Powerball rules. Lottery officials in April announced plans to add two white balls to the random selection process in an effort to reduce the frequency and boost the grand prize. They also doubled the prize amount for five correct numbers, from the $100,000 Schroeder mentioned, to $200,000.
The odds of winning the $200,000 prize are about 1 in 3.56 million.
