Despite two touchdown passes from Ryan Drey to Luke Vanderwoude, the Storm Lake High junior varsity football team fell 37-28 to LeMars earlier this week.

The Tornadoes were down 15-6 early but Drey's two scoring strikes to Vanderwoude led the comeback. Drey passed for three touchdowns while running back Alex Severson ran for over 100 yards and scored a rushing touchdown.

The Tornado JV, 0-4, plays host to Spencer next week.



The Storm Lake High freshman football team dropped a pair of games in recent action.

In Algona Sept. 12, the Tornado freshmen lost a 30-19 decision. The Bulldogs jumped to a 30-6 halftime lead, outscoring SLHS 14-6 in the first quarter and 16-0 in the second.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Tornadoes rallied for 13 points in the fourth frame before falling short.

Algona outrushed Storm Lake 323-144. Ben Seaman led SLHS with 64 yards on nine carries and scored a touchdown. Eric Smith ran seven times for 24 yards and Tyler Gibbins four times for 21 yard and one T.D.

The Tornado freshmen completed 13 of 24 passes for 107 yards, including a 15-yard scoring pass from Seamen to Casey Schultz.

Last week, Estherville edged the SLHS freshmen 20-14. The Tornadoes led 8-6 early but trailed 14-8 at the half. E-LC scored once in the third quarter and the Tornadoes once in the fourth.

Quarterback Ben Seaman threw a pair of 52-yard scoring passes, one to Tony Pertzborne and another to Jose Diaz. Courtney Goodchild added three catches for 35 yards. The Tornadoes connected on 9 of 134 passes for 171 yards but were outrushed 155-3.



The Storm Lake seventh-grade volleyball teams split a pair of games recently with their Cherokee counterparts.

The SL 7th grade A team swept Cherokee 25-16, 25-15 and 15-13. Megan Thompson was 14 of 15 at the service line while Katelyn Goodchild was 14 of 19. Jackie Brungardt was eight of 11 in serving and Katelyn Larson five of seven.

The SL seventh-grade B-team was swept by Cherokee, 25-15, 25-16 and 15-7.

Tori Peck was 10 of 11 at the service line while Nya Ngut was seven of seven, Rachelle Freidhof four of four and Carrie Shimon four of five.



The Storm Lake High varsity girls swim meet Oct. 10 against Spencer and Algona will start at 5 p.m.

According to SLHS Athletic Director Rick Anderson, the meet start time was moved up because of other homecoming activities.

The double dual meet will be held at the Finkbine Pool on the Buena Vista campus in Storm Lake.



The Schaller-Crestland volley ball team split a pair of games win Galva-Holstein at the River Valley Tournament last Saturday in Correctionville.

G-H beat the Wildcats 21-13, 21-16 in pool play but Schaller came back and beat the Lady Pirates 22-24, 21-16 and 15-12 in the championship game of the tournament.
