Alta boys dominate own Invitational

ALTA - According to Alta cross country coach Wendell Larson, a home meet often brings about the best in the host teams.

That was the case with the Cyclone boys and girls harriers here on Monday afternoon in the Alta Cross Country Invitational at West Links golf course.

The boys team won the seven-team meet with 19 points, just four points off a perfect score. Hinton was second with 62 and Sibley-Ocheyedan third with 87 points. Laurens-Marathon was fourth with 89 points.

Alta's Tyler Sliefert took top honors, taking first on the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes, 34 seconds. Quentin Thomas was second in 18 minutes, while Jordan Letzring took fourth (18:17) and Kyle Sauter fifth (19:11).

Also for the Alta boys, Brian Sauter was seventh in 19:36, and Alan Hinkeldey ninth in 19:55. Alta's Adam Holton was 17th in 20:49.

Also in the boys race, Laurens-Marathon was paced by an 11th place finish by Matt Hertz in 20:20. Tyler Koenig was 14th in 20:33, Brett Snyder 18th in 20:50, C.J. Mayou 20th in 21:10 and Justin Depew 26th in 22:26.

The Aurelia boys didn't field a full team but Gaylen Miller was the top finisher in 22:11. Jamie Hentz was 28th in 23:35 and Kyle Doherty 29th in 24:57,

Schaller-Crestland's Ben Currie had a standout race, medaling with a sixth-place finish in 19:19.

Meanwhile, Sibley-Ocheyedan was the top finisher in the varsity girls team competition, finishing with 39 points. Hinton was second with 42 points and Alta was third with 58 points. Laurens-Marathon was fourth with 107 points.

The top area finisher was Aurelia's Wendy Nelson, who took third, finishing the 4,000-meter course in 18:20. Also for Aurelia, Jessica Mann was 23rd in 22:47 and Christa Ballantyne 24th in 22:48.

According to Bulldog coach Jolene Hultgren, Nelson's third place was her top finish of the season thus far.

"Wendy ran a great race by taking the lead in the first 1,000 meters," she said.

The Alta girls were led by Katie Connolly, who took fourth overall in 18:26. Anne Curbow was ninth in 19:01 and Megan Suhr tenth in 19:08.

Kelsie Petersen was 15th in 20:02, with Tara Huseman 10th in 22:08 and Lakin Stevicks 25th in 23:28.

For Laurens-Marathon, Kari Fredricks was the top finisher, taking 14th in 19:95. Krista Fredricks was 21st in 22:12 and Becky Josephson 19th in 20:57. Nikki Cox finished 26th in 24:27 and Erica Teague was 27th in 24:36.
