Tamela Ann Lyon, 59, of Mesa, passed away September 17. Tami was born in 1946 in Storm Lake, to Frank and Marian Mills. She graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1964 and attended the Gale Institute in Minneapolis for flight attendant training, but was soon recruited by the federal civil service and traveled to Washington, D.C. and Oahu, Hawaii to work for the U.S. Marine Corps.
Her beautiful smile earned her a nod as finalist for Marine Corps Queen in April 1965. Tami was a much-loved fundraiser, employee, mother, and friend in Rapid City, South Dakota, where she lived from 1973 until 1986. After moving to Tempe, Arizona, with her husband and three children, Tami devoted herself to coordinating the extremely busy lives of her active family while also working full-time in Tempe's elementary and high school district offices. Her laughter, zest for life, and upbeat outlook are an inspiration to and will be forever remembered by her surviving family.
Tami was preceded in death by her mother, Marian Jeanne Mills, her father, Frank Lamar Mills, and her daughter, Ashley Jeanne Lyon. Survivors include her daughter Mandi (of Washington, D.C.), son Joshua (of Mesa, AZ), and brothers Tim Mills (of Glendale, AZ) and Todd Mills (of Omaha, NE). A memorial service was held Friday, September 23 at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Tempe, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tami's name to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund or the American Cancer Society.
