Richard "Dick" Larsen

Richard "Dick" Larson passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 20 after a long battle with cancer at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, with burial at 3:00 p.m. in Reinbeck.

Dick was born in Newell in 1933, and graduated in 1950 from Newell High School. He graduated from Buena Vista College, and later went on to teach and coach at Reinbeck High School, where he met his wife, Janet. They were married on June 14, 1958. Dick later moved to Des Moines, where he started Sports-A-Foot, a small chain of athletic shoe stores, from which he retired in 1993.

Dick loved baseball and coached at Beaverdale Little League for many years. In the 70's, he coached the senior league Indians. He later went on to coach his grandson, Shawn's team, and retired from coaching in 2003. Dick was a member of the NW Rotary Club and Mount Olive Lutheran Church.

Dick is survived by his loving wife, Janet; three sons, Randy (Chris) Larsen of Des Moines, Dana (Holly) Larsen of Oakdale, CA and Scott (Carla) Larsen of Johnston; three grandsons, Shawn, Ryan and Willem; three granddaughters, Shalane, Kelsi and Savannah; brother, Royce (Marcyne) Larsen of Newell; and sisters-in-laws, Mary (Merle) Lynch and Doris (David) Hite, both of Reinbeck. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann Larsen; his parents, Ernest and Irene Larsen; and a brother, Dean Larsen.

Visitation will be held Friday, September 23 from 6 - 8 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. A special thanks for all the care given Dick at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, and to all his friends that visited him during his final weeks. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston or Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
